News you may have missed

Some stories that may or may not have come across your radar this weekend:

Bird Poop Least of Owner's Problems...
Presidential Candidates Not Total Douchebags...
Keep Your Eyes On Your Bags...
The Quiet Sun...

Details and links after the jump.

LOCAL NEWS: In Trenton, New Jersey, our brave boys in blue launched a dramatic rescue after hearing cries of help... from a cockatoo. Turns out this isn't even the first false alarm triggered by this bird, who attracted the attention of child services years earlier with realistic baby cries. If that was my bird, it would be doing another impression right now; passing itself off as fried chicken.

POLITICS: In a refreshing and surprising show of non-douchebaggery, it was announced that both presidential candidates will make a joint visit to ground zero on September 11th. For one day, or part of one day, we won't have to listen to unfair accusations and hysterical defenses about patriotism. From the candidates, at least. I am sure the media will gladly use the occasion as a platform for talking about it.

SPORTS: When Tatum Bell was cut by the Lions to make room for Rudi Johnson on the roster, Bell took it like a man. Then he took Johnson's luggage. Security footage revealed that Bell had walked off with the bags and they were ultimately returned, though a bit lighter without the weight of Johnson's money, credit cards and clothes. Take my job I take your shit.

SCIENCE: The sun is the least active it has been in a long time (long time from a human perspective, anyway). August was the first month since 1913 to record zero sunspots (I presume that means since we started recording sunspots).
